Kampala influencers, elites and party-goers to enjoy another Kabagarame experience this Saturday.

Updated: Apr 26, 2022

On Saturday 30th April 2022, the biannual Kabagarame Kampala Festival (KKF) kicks off at the Uganda Museum, Kampala, following two-years absentia due to the government imposed COVID-19 precautionary lockdown. The famous Kabagarame Kampala Festival is modelled after the Kabagarame food market and is the largest venue in Bushenyi, where pork is relished in a traditional set-up. Following a successful Kabagarame Kampala Festival in 2019 at Naguru Hilltop, it was evident that Kampala influencers, elites, party-goers and revellers were looking forward to more festivals. The KKF organizers are hosting a bigger KKF to celebrate the end of the lockdown and the return of the festival. Kabagarame is a well-known food market in Bushenyi where people from all walks of life meet every Saturday to enjoy specially prepared pork with blended millet (kalo) or mashed plantain(matooke) and cold beers.

James Rwitsyoro, an influencer who attended KKF in 2019 shared:“Kabagarame is very nostalgic for people who grew up and live in the West. It is more than just enjoying pork delicacies traditionally, it is all about hanging out with friends, and catching up with old acquaintances. It’s about the experience and the good vibes of the place and the festival. It’s hard to explain, you have to just experience it for yourself!”
The famous Kabagarame Food Market in Bushenyi

The Kabagarame market in Bushenyi prides itself on dishes cooked and served in a traditional setting with a great emphasis on good food presentation and lively ambience. The age-old, top-secret recipe has been attracting revellers and locals since XXX. On Kabagarame’s specific market days, the locally sourced, farm-fresh, organic pork is either fried or roasted depending on the customer’s preferences. There is a whole assortment of accompaniments, from blended millet (kalo) or mashed plantain(matooke) to cold beverages such as beer. Traditionally, the delicacy is shared by a group of people and enjoyed with hands, not cutlery. It is a bonding experience.

The variety of foods on display includes bitter, sour, and sweet treats. Only fresh and local spices are used. This gives the food a unique flavor and that sets it apart from other food festivals on the market.

One of the festival's founders, Owen Mwesigye, told the press:“The festival was developed to bring a cherished meal and reunion experience closer to the city's people. Those who have been to Kabagarame should expect a home-away-from-home experience in Kampala, while those who attended our previous edition in 2019 at Hilltop Naguru must expect nothing less than bigger and better.” He explained: “This is the first of the two KKF 2022 editions, a celebration bundled with food tourism, reunion moments, and the cuisine is totally organic, 100% Kabagarame recipe.

Gates will open from 10.00am and for only Shs10,000, you can visit Uganda Museum for a memorable experience.”
